PRESENTATION ABSTRACT FOR 2014 FAMFT ANNUAL CONFERENCE JUNE 14-15, 2014

Efficacy of Sexual Genograms in Clinical Practice: Victoria reveals family secrets

In the field of sexual therapy, psychotherapists  work with a fragile balance between two interconnected subsystems in one entity: embodied minds and mindful bodies (Flemons, Green, 2014).  The sexual genogram can be a useful therapeutic tool, allowing therapists to successfully work with both  subsystems in a complementary way while maintaining a systemic perspective of entropy and interconnectedness. The sexual genogram can provide therapists with a sexual and relational context that is key in  sexual therapy with couples and individuals.

Applying  Bowen’s cornerstone concepts in a context of sexual therapy, this presentation will  introduce three clinical cases where sexual genograms were used as an essential and effective tool in a therapeutic process. The presentation will demonstrate the advantages of  genograms in a clinical context, particularly in sexual therapy, to enhance therapeutic work with  clients.
